Mid-Cities Care Corps (MCCC) is proud to be a part of the Service Learning program at UTA. This is the second year MCCC has joined with Dr. Henderson’s senior creative writing class which connects students with applied learning in the community. This semester five MCCC Clients and twelve students participated. UTA students were linked with an MCCC Client, visited twice to learn about the Client’s life experiences, and then completed the class assignment to write the Client’s biography. On the third visit, the students shared the biography with the Client.
UTA holds an annual Service Learning Showcase which involves selected students to share their experiences. Ms. Lee, one of the UTA students visiting Ms. Lou, has aspirations of one day owning her own salon. She received a wonderful note from Ms. Lou after the visits indicating Ms. Lou was once a beautician and certain that Ms. Lee would make a wonderful beautician after getting to know her through their visits. Ms. Lee held up the note and stated, “when I have my salon this note will be framed on the wall.”
Attendees to the Service Learning Showcase agreed that the presentation about the MCCC experience was the most touching. It is nice to see the bridging of the generations be so successful and fulfilling.
